The Flash Technique: A Gentle and Versatile Approach to Trauma Therapy

Flash Technique

The Flash Technique is a relatively new, yet highly promising therapeutic approach developed within the EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) framework. Designed to reduce distress linked to traumatic memories, Flash offers a gentler, more accessible way to begin trauma work, which is particularly useful for clients who feel overwhelmed by traditional memory processing approaches.

Unlike standard EMDR, which involves focused attention on the traumatic memory, Flash allows clients to keep their attention away from the disturbing material. Instead, clients lightly “dip into” the target memory just enough to activate it, then shift their focus to a positive and engaging experience, theme, or topic (called a Positive Engaging Focus, or PEF). During this process, bilateral stimulation is used, usually via alternate tapping, to help the brain process the material subconsciously, without direct exposure or verbal processing. Flash refers to a sporadic triple blink of the eyes that the client is asked to do on the instruction of “Flash” (or even “Blink”) from the therapist.

This indirect approach makes Flash especially valuable for:

  • Highly dissociative or avoidant clients
  • Individuals who are struggling with isolated but highly distressing memories
  • Individuals with complex PTSD or early developmental trauma
  • Those with chronic shame, guilt, or grief
  • Clients in the early phases of addiction recovery, where emotional stability is still fragile

Although Flash is a newer technique, a growing number of clinical studies and real-world case reports support its effectiveness. Emerging research suggests that Flash can significantly reduce distress related to traumatic memories, sometimes within minutes, and can serve as a powerful precursor to deeper EMDR work.

Additionally, the evidence suggests that with some clients, Flash can be a standalone treatment approach and can be used both powerfully and effectively in the absence of EMDR or other widely known trauma-based approaches.
